Barnard Castle’s Greggs branch set to reopen this weekend

A popular branch of Greggs is set to reopen tomorrow after closing at short notice on February 13.

The doors have stayed closed all week at the popular high street bakery in Barnard Castle.

Customers stopping off to buy their favourite pastries, sandwiches and hot drinks were confronted by a sign taped to the glass stating: “Due to technical faults the shop is closed until the issue is resolved. Thank you.”

The branch on Horse Market didn’t open for business last Friday and has been closed ever since.

The Mercury contacted Greggs’ head office several times this week to establish the reason for the closure but didn’t receive a formal reply.

However, Ian Harrison, Durham County Council’s business compliance manager, said: “We received an anonymous complaint relating to the Greggs store in Barnard Castle on Monday this week.

“A visit on the same day found that the business was closed.

“After discussing the complaint with the company, we understand that the premises will remain closed in the short term but will reopen soon.”

The Mercury understands that business is expected to reopen to the public tomorrow.
