Place to reflect and remember loved ones finished

PEOPLE in West Auckland now have a place to remember loved ones who have been cremated, thanks to the parish council.

The newly-created Place of Reflection was completed at the village cemetery earlier this month after ten months of work.

Cllr Neil Simpson said: “It came up at one meeting that we should have somewhere for people who have had a loved one cremated to sit and remember them.

“It wasn’t going anywhere until Cllr Billy Robinson took it over. On and off it took ten months to complete. We had a rock picked out from Dunhouse Quarry but the first one cracked and we couldn’t find another one like it. We didn’t want to put any rock in, we wanted a decent one because it is a special place.”

A resin floor was installed, along with two benches and a wooden wall with hooks where people can hang wreaths or flowers for their loved one.

The work was completed on November 5, just in time for Remembrance Day commemorations.
